New Stone Sculpture

Late this month there is a fund raising event for which I’m donating a stone sculpture.  This photo shows the initial rough. The material is zebra marble. The design isn’t yet final but I’m leaning toward an abstract form serving as a desktop business card holder.

Fremont Troll

Earlier  today, drove by this quite famous troll which sits under a bridge in funky Fremont, north of Seattle. Zoom in to see the vintage VW Bug under his claw.

MARBLE/marble blog update

Added a Live Traffic Map (and a Masks at MoCA update) to my MARBLE/marble blog. It will be fun to watch.

Artistic and Creative Symposiums and Adventures

For some time I have been thinking of building and maintaining a list of artistic and creative adventures around the world. A sort of personal “places and things to see and do before you die” (except that I’m Not)…
I‘m using a new on-line mind map tool which [...]

“Break Out”

Masks at MoCA 2008, completed entry. I’m pleased with how it turned out. Definately and improvement over last year’s entry: Masks at MoCA 2007
Each year an artists statement must accompany the mask. Here is mine for 2008:
“Break Out”
“The only sin is ugliness, and if we believed this with all our being, all other activities of [...]

More Progress

The Masks at MoCA deadline is looming! More progress today. Remaining is some fine tuning of the stone textures and polish and then a paint treatment for the mask itself. I’m thinking a slight cream with gradation to darker shades at the edges.

The hard part is done…

Well, the tricky part at least…

Above, on the left, is the now-trimmed original mask, upside down. On the right is the Alabaster stone with a carved trough to match and enclose the jagged edge of the mask.

The finish work will look much different than this but the final basic form — the smooth facial form [...]

Masks at MoCA

This is my second year as a contributing artist for the Museum of Contemporary Art’s annual fund raiser. The completed mask is due sometime near the middle of November. Last year, I waited until the last minute. Getting started is my main objective for this weekend. I’m thinking it’s going to be part stone.

Full Moon over Long Pong

I used to generate massive (gigapixel) stitched panoramas using an arcane piece of software called PTAssembler combined with an even more obtuse tool — the workhorse underneath — Panorama Tools.  This pair of tools is an amazingly flexible powerhouse; but not for the faint of heart.  At HP I had grand visions of creating a [...]

Ольга Керн: Olga Kern

Last evening, I had the opportunity to sit not 3 meters from the amazing Russian classical pianist Olga Kern in concert.  Olga won the Gold Medal in the Eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, considered to be the best and toughest piano competition in the world.  She is the first woman to achieve this honor since [...]
