Texas Cream

Piedra-in-Limestone 26AUG07Spent an hour with the slab of Texas Cream limestone today. Next to marble, this is like carving butter. Looking forward to more time on this.

Thinking about carving an abstract torso “plant stand” into the large block of Crema Español (a particularly attractive variety of marble from Spain) I’ve been holding on to for a year. The block shows in a year-old photo below (left edge).

This is the stuff I’m really looking forward to. Though a bit intimidated by it at the moment. I’ve worked the kinks out of my outdoor “sculpting studio” now with air, electric and ventilation. How will it be this winter? Great view at least.

For the past three months I have enjoyed a splendid summer away from the world of high-tech. It’s been great. I deeply miss the thrill of bleeding-edge technology though. And the work-place camaraderie that only comes from a creative team chasing a common goal. So I’m looking. I would like more flexibility than I had with Hewlett-Packard: I want large blocks of time off to travel the world in search of sculpting and painting opportunities. jajaja. Just learned of a great bargain for a spring painting workshop in Rome. Eccellente! There is an abundance of such workshops—taunting me.

Rocks from AUG06I think my ideal job would be in research at a university where I then have summer’s off. I should probably look into that. I should probably get serious. Not sure I want to get back into a regular 9-to-5 (not that I would pretend to suggest that’s what I did at HP).

The lake level is rising again. Tons of seagulls skimming the water today. I wonder how high it will get before the first freeze. This summer was a record-breaker: almost the entire sand beach was under water.

Living on the water’s edge is magical. Looks like there may be some spectacular sunset photos in a bit.

Hope to stay here a while.
