Starting a new category: “Only in the USA”. There are a lot of good reasons to like living in the USA. There are many other aspects of life with Uncle Sam that are ridiculous, alarming or downright scary—some of which make me want to run for the nearest border. Many of these, on some level, are firmly rooted in the disturbing and persistent impact of puritanism. Here is an excellent example in the ‘ridiculous’ category: Massachusetts, one of the most liberal states in the republic, is also one of the oldest and still has some liturgical housecleaning to do. I’m due a prison term upon entering the state. To wit: The General Laws of Massachusetts: CHAPTER 272. CRIMES AGAINST CHASTITY, MORALITY, DECENCY AND GOOD ORDER
